Lost Icons

1 hour 44 min ago
District - ? Do you mean a Domain based network ( Sever handles the
login and policy control ).

Generally when a new profile is created it is an inability to open and use
the pre-existing User Hive. (NTUser.Dat). Corruption can happen in a
number of ways. If the network is domain based and this happens on a
number of client computers the issue may point to the server.

The icons you mention are because a new profile is created from the
template or "Default User" profile. Usually this isn't customized to show
any individual setups.

You should review the System Event log on the client machines and see
what if any errors ( & Event IDs ) are being logged. Usually this is a key
way to run down issues like this.

Format issues when saving file from .docx to doc

Why bother? There is compatibility pack for users of pre 2007 Office to
open 2007 documents.

Linksys WRT110 and Windows7

The fact that you are going from a Windows XP machine to a Windows 7
one doesn't matter. A router connects hardware, and the operating
system isn't really involved.

deleting addresses instead of going to them!

3 hours 14 min ago
for the web addess list that is available when using the drop down menu when
signed into IE8 - whose silly idea was it to put the delete button
immediately below the drop down menu arrow, so that every time i want to go
to the address i delete it instead!! not a useful feature!

Missing INF File

Speediest solution:
-- download from HP the latest XP driver(s) for this printer
-- uninstal the printer then instal it as new; when prompted,
/Browse to the new drivers (not those on your WinXP instal disk.)

INFormation files are not usually called by Windows or
by printer functions. They are used only to alter the OS
by loading drivers (which thereafter the Hive/Registry
will load) -- and if all INF files were deleted a good
installation would reboot just the same. So it may not
help to know what procedure or app says this file is "missing."

Office Help and Embeded links

4 hours 4 min ago
Strange problem on one machine. Help files work, however, like the show all
link or any of the other links that show up, clicking on them does nothing.
All other machines are working with not problem, just this one.
Uninstall/reinstall does not work. It is not the customer feedback problem
or the default browser. Any ideas?

Link to File is not working. EMBEDs are displayed as icons.

4 hours 34 min ago
I'm trying to create links to image files (.EMF .JPG .WMF) in Word 2007,
Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007. Instead of getting a LINK, I get an EMBED
Package.

Open a blank Word 2007 doc / Insert tab / on Text panel click Object button
/ Create from File tab / Browse... to the file / turn on "Link to file" /
click OK.

Depending on the image file type, I either get an icon and filename, or just
the filename. Pressing Alt-F9 shows that it got inserted as an "EMBED
Package", not a "LINK".

If I perform the same steps to link to a Word or Excel file, the complete
doc or spreadsheet is displayed, and Alt-F9 shows that it is a LINK.

Additionally, when I perform similar steps on an image file, but leave "Link
to file" turned off, I still get icons and filenames.

I'm running Windows XP, Service Pack 3, 091208-2036. Microsoft Office Small
Business 2007, Word 2007 (12.0.6504.5000) SPs MSO (12.0.6425.1000).
Different systems at my company running Vista or XP (Service Pack 3) get
different results...sometimes it works as expected...sometimes it doesn't.

My 2 problems are:

1. I need to have full images displayed in the Word, Excel, or PowerPoint
file.

2. When I turn on "Link to File", I should get a LINK, not EMBED Package.

How can I change my settings to overcome both of these problems? What ARE
the settings that control these?

Any help will be appreciated!

And one of them is insufficient RAM.

My system boots and shuts down much faster now that I have 4G of RAM. Well,
I also replaced the motherboard when I installed the new RAM, so I'm not
sure what helped. But one can never be too rich or have too much RAM.

Connect to Access Database

I am wondering if it is possibe to create a template for OneNote that would
then connect to an access database to pull data for the form and submit data
back to the database? I would like to be able to pull and submit but also
save off what the person writes in OneNote. Is this possible?

Should have also stated that this is what the Normal style is by default.
If you select the No spacing right next to the Normal style on the ribbon
(Home) then you also would not have a spacing issue.

proxy server profiles in group policy

5 hours 54 min ago
is it possible to set a proxy server using group policy only when the user is
inside the office network but shut it off when they leave? I know you can do
this with the windows firewall (they allow a standard and a domain profile so
when the system starts inside the network, the firewall is shut down.)

Our users with laptops have to manually remove and add the proxy everytime
they leave and come back into the office.

1. What AV plan guarantees freedom from viruses & malware?
2. Test Power Supply Unit (free in most specialist PC repair shops.)
3. Test RAM (e.g. RAMTEST86 run from floppy.)
4. Run hard disk diagnostics available from the manufacturer.

Log of Internet Explorer activity on my PC

6 hours 14 min ago
Please,
anyone can help me to understand who is writing a log that outline all web
accessed? I am with IE8 on Vista SP2. I am suspicious because if there are
the web's names it can possible also outline user and password used to
access other web (i.e. bank web).
The named log is available
C:\Users\Admin\Appdata\Local\Temp\Low\dsSam_iexplo re.exe.log (I attach an
example with access to www.google.it).
I don't know if it is created by IE8 or I am some malware installed.
Thanks in advance
Serafino

Squirrelmail problem: Message not sent. Server replied: 354

7 hours 4 min ago
I have installed Fedora 12 on a new box where I run a DNS, mail
(sendmail), IMAP (dovecot) and http (Apache) server. When I use
squirrelmail *all* users can read their messages but some users have
trouble sending new messages or replying to messages. Once the
message is composed, for the users that have problems, clicking on the
"send" button squirrelmail sits there for minutes then reports the
following error message: "Message not sent. Server replied: 354". I
spent the past two days trying to debug the problem and here are my
findings so far:

- I googled "Message not sent. Server replied: 354" and read and tried
all the suggestions I have found to no avail
- If I use "mail" or "elm" messages can be retrieved and sent for
*all* users without any problem.
- I looked at the log files /var/log/{messages | maillog | httpd/*}
and there is no unusual messages there
- the users that have these problems have been added manually (*) and
not using system-config-users.
- if I create a new user using system-config-users, the new user does
not have any issues.
- if I delete one of the problem users and add it again using system-
config-users, that user still has the same issues.
- in spite of the above message, the message is sent and a copy of the
message gets saved in the Sent folder.
- Disabling SELinux does not have any effect.

So, in short, this problem seems to be related to how I created these
users and to the imap server (given the fact these users can send
using mail and elm).
It does not seem to be related to dns server, sendmail or squirrelmail
installation and configuration.

Questions (assuming nobody has knows how to fix this) :

1) which server is responding 354? Is it Dovecot, Sendmail, Apache?
2) which log files should I look at? Is there a way for me to see
what Squirrelmail is doing? Is there a logfile squirrelmail can write
to?
3) I think I read somewhere that sendmail or imap keeps a database of
users. I had the impression that a user just needed an entry in /etc/
passwd.
4) what other subjects should I search in google, or websites I should
look at, or other usenet newsgroups I should post this to?

Paolo (who is ready and eager to learn!).

(*) I edited the passwd/shadow/gshadow files, manually created their
home dirs, changed the ownership of the home dir and set their
password using passwd.
That's how I always used to add new users, apparently this does not
really work anymore!
